Originally constructed in 1890, The Foundry in East Cambridge underwent a comprehensive transformation, honoring its rich industrial heritage while embracing modern functionality. The project involved a meticulous gut renovation of the historic 3-story, 54,400 sf building, preserving its exterior masonry walls and interior heavy timber columns. With a focus on historical integrity, the new exterior facade features wood-clad windows alongside metal wall panels and restored masonry elements. The project also included a 13,000 sf addition, which houses a dynamic community center offering workshops, visual and performing arts spaces, administrative offices, and multi-use areas. This renovation and expansion project revitalized a landmark and achieved LEED Gold certification.
